    ZM/R - PORTMOTE COURT ROLLS
ZM/R3 - Description available at other catalogue level

The Portmote Court dealt with pleas of real estate as well as pleas of trespass, covenant and debt. It always met on a Monday, usually two or three times a month. The court rolls contain both pleas and enrolments of deeds and exist as a separate series from 1295 to 1563. From 1561, the formal proceedings of the Portmote and Pentice Courts are filed together, making a series known as General Court Rolls (Ref. MSR). After 1553, the Portmote Court Rolls also contain proceedings in the Crownmote Court and Quarter Sessions.

Adam GYN and Thomas of Hokenhul

In the Pentice court in 1306 William of Doncaster and John Hurel were fined for not making suit at the Portmote and with them are associated Robert of Macclesfield, Adam GYN and Thomas of Hokenhul. It is probable that here are the names of three more judgers.(5) And, in fact, Hugh of Hokenhul, probably a son of Thomas, is repeatedly amerced in 1320/21, for failing to attend the Portmote to render dooms as a judger.(6) With him is occasionally associated John of Hatherne.(7) Apart from these cases, however, it is nowhere explicitly stated that such and such an individual was a judger.

Rector of Geyton Thorp, John GYNNE (or Geyney)

[Note: Geyton Thorp is in Norfolk and there is a 'John GYN' who was chaplain in Norwich, Norfolk; see note: John_Gyn_1430_Norwich.txt]

refers to the brass as well as to a rector named 'John GYNNE' between 1454 to 1489

1.

The church of Geyton Thorp is dedicated to St. Mary, and is a single ancient pile, covered with lead, has a round tower at the west end, (with two bells,) and is covered with a cap.

In the chancel lies a gravestone with a brass plate,

Orate p. a'i'a. Johans. GYNNE, quo'da' rectoris istius ecclie qui obt. xviii die mens. Maij Ao. Dni Millo. c.c.c.c. lxxxix cuj. &c.

Gayton Thorpe Church History

A slab at the East end of the Chancel could be the grave of the former rector, John Geyney, who died in 1489. Bloomfield writes of a brass here which has long since disappeared. There is a fine plain window seat sedilia ad piscine.

Somersetshire pleas, civil and criminal, from the rolls of the itinerant justices .., Vol. 44
Published in 1897

For the 8th year of the reign of Edward I (1280)

Vol IV

Part 1 Civil Pleas

Edited by Lionel Landon

(m. 49) Geoffrey Buchard, William de Miridon' and John Markelyn seek against John GYN and Joan his wife a messuage, eight acres of land and one virgate and a half of land, excepting 20 acres of meadow, in Kyngesbyry of which Hugh de la Berghe, kinsman of the aforesaid Geoffrey, William and John Markelyn whose heirs they are, was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day on which etc.

And John (GYN) and Joan come : and they vouch to warranty thereon the bishop of Bath with the dean and chapter of Wells and the prior of Bath. Let them have them at Winton' in county Suthampt' on three weeks after S. Martin's day by aid of the court and let them be summoned in this county.

(m. 49) Joan who was the wife of John le Hert seeks against William le Hert a third part of a messuage, of a curtilage and of an acre and a half of land in Dultingcote as dower etc.

And William comes : and he says that she ought not to have dower therein because he says that one Adam Godsweyn, to whom John the late husband of Joan demised those tenements, made satisfaction to Joan for those tenements and he asks judgement whether she ought or can be dowered a second time of those tenements.

Afterwards: William came and by licence gave her her said dower etc. Let her have her seisin thereof.

From this, John GYN died before Joan won her case.

John GYN Ufford Suffolk

The proportion of people possessing their own home probably rose sharply
in the immediate aftermath of the Black Death, and consequently the drop in
the demand for housing was not as great as the fall in population. Yet many
manorial courts of the 1350s and 1360s record a steady trickle of presentments
for dilapidation on villein tenements, as the least attractive buildings fell into
disuse or were taken down. At this early date the courts usually adopted an
aggressive stance towards such wastage.

In the early 1370s John GYN paid the Ufford court 5s. 4d. to remove a house and rebuild it in Melton, ...

FOREST INDUSTRY AT WALTHAM. These great woods, no doubt, involved much woodland industry, of which we are ignorant, We can imagine that the felling and the barking were done by forced labour of the serf cottagers. We can guess that Walter Wheler, who took oath of fealty in 1400, was really Walter, the wheelwright, and that: John GYN, carpenter, and John Gybbe, carpenter, had materia* enough to hand for their craft

FREQUENT TRESPASS IN CROPS.

One result of the great fenceless fields was constant trespass in the manorial crops by the cattle of tenants. In fact, if we except the transfers of land, there is no business of the Court Baron which occupies so much of the rolls as the mulcts for such trespasses. The manorial land was in charge of a propositus (or farm-bailiff), and, at harvest-time, of a messor (or chief-reaper). These officers were elected and removed by the Court Baron. Thus in October, 1398, Jeffrey Curwen was elected propositus, and Jeffrey Davenyssh, messor.

In March, 1401, Jeffrey Davenyssh was removed, and John GYN elected into his place.

## p. 403-404 (#414) ############################################

ILKETESHALE'S MANOR

Was that which Harold's freemen abovementioned held, and were
ejected, and the Ilketeshalls possessed it after Ralph. Sir Gilbert de
İlketeshale was lord of this manor, with that of Hedenham in Norfolk,
and of Ilketeshale in Suffolk, from whence they assumed their name;
and Sir Thomus was his son and heir, as appears from the register of
Holm abbey, and a fine levied in the 7th of Henry III. Gilbert was
son and heir of Sir Thomas, and had a charter for freewarren in Kel-
ling, Salthouse and Hedingham, and Ilketeshale, in the 32d of that
King.
Sir James de Ilketeshale was son of Gilbert, and in the 52d of the
aforesaid King, mortgaged for 27 marks and an half of silver, to the
Lady Sarra, prioress of the church of the Holy Cross of Bungey, lands,
from the feast of the nativity of the Blessed Virgin, to the purification
following, and if the money was not then paid, the nuns to have the
lands for ever : witnesses, Sir Henry de Ryveshale, Sir William de
Brom, &c.
In the following year, he conveyed an acre of land and the advow-
'son of the church of St. John Baptist, of Ilketeshale, by fine, to the
said priory: he married Maud, daughter of Richard de la Rokele, and
was father of James de Ilketeshale, who married Aliva, daughter of
Sir Thomas Weland, the judge, and released to him, his wife, and his
beirs, in the 13th of Edward I. all his right in this lordship, and died
about the 18th of the said reign.
Sir James, had, by Aliva his wife, a son, James, who was also a
knight, and took io wife Ida, daughter and coheir of Sir Robert
de Stafford, Knt. by Gundreda his wife; and Sir Robert was son of
Sir William, by Ermetrude his wife, daughter and coheir of Robert,
son of Walkeline, lord of Rodbourn, Moggynton, and Eggygnton, in
Derbyshire.
In the 6th of Edward II. a deed was executed between Sir James
de Ilketeshale on one part, and James his son, and Ida his wife,
whereby James and Ida grant the manor of Kelling to Sir James, for
life, and Sir James released to them 91. per ann. out of his 15l. per ann.
apouity, which they were to pay him and Alida his wife, for the ma-
nor of Hedenham; dated at liketeshale, on Monday next after the feast
of St. Michael. Soon after it is probable, Sir James the father died.
Sir James de Ilketeshale was lord in the 9th of Edward II. as appears
from the famous record called Nomima Villarum, and was burnt in
the fire of London, 1666 : he and Ida his wife were living in the 15th
of Edward III. Ida his wife survived him, but they both died in the
15th of Edward III, and left 2 sons, Robert and Philip.

Robert, in the said year, confirmed this manor in trust to Robert
GYN, parson of Hedenham, and sealed with or, a fess between two
chevronels, gules, and a canton, ermine.

In the 28th of that King, Sir Philip de Ilketeshale remitted to Sir
Robert his brother and Claricia his wife, and their heirs, all his right
in this manor, by deed dated at Kelling, on Monday next after the
feast of Pentecost.

Sir Robert, then living at Hedenham, confirmed this lordship and
that of Hedenham, to Sir William de Kerdeston, Sir Thomus Savage,
&c. in trust, by deed dated on Tuesday, in Whitsunday, in the said
year.

Sir Robert died before the year 1381, when Claricia, his late wife,
was the wife of Sir Robert de Morley, and she was living in the 15th
of Richard II. and had dower in this lordship; by the said Claricia
Sir Robert de Ilketeshale had 2 sons, and a daughter, Joan, married to
William de Sharborne, Esq.

In 1599, they were granted in perpetuity to Robert Chamberlen and Humphrey Wymes, as trustees for Sir Walter Cope, who the next year aliened the moiety of the rectorial tithes to Robert Horsman, by whom they were conveyed in 1618 to Robert GYNN. The latter aliened them in 1630 to Sir William Blake, who, the same year, joining with GYNN, conveyed them to John Marsh.

This Sir William Blake is not the William Blake, poet who lived from 1757 - 1827.

He is probably the London wine merchant Sir William Blake ...

BLAKE, William (c.1582-1630), of Hale House, Kensington, Mdx.

1600 The Origins

The London wine merchant Sir William Blake builds an extensive portfolio of land in Kensington, Brompton and Knightsbridge in the early seventeenth century. The estate was largely occupied by nurseries and market gardens.

The early date is confirmed by the presence of Robert GYNNE, who witnessed Clement Paston's will in 1419

and

The animals, grain, farm tools, and domestic utensils (duly apprised by Robert GYNNE and John Albon of Paston), which were handed over to William Joye, were carefully detailed in an inventory.

Thomas GYN of Aston

Very likely this man is an ancestor of William Ginn (d. 1520). But we can't know this from information currently available. All we know is that he was alive in 1440, before William was born, and he was well enough situated to have a servant.

He may be father, grandfather, uncle or cousin.

He appears to also have a connection to a 'John Peryen of Digswell', judging by the fact that both these men had servants with the same last name.

Ordinacio Fullonum.

Petition to the Mayor and Aldermen by John Oliscompe, Geoffrey Suttone, and John Swift, on behalf of themselves and other Fullers of the City; that the use of urine in the fulling of cloths may be forbidden; that no one exercise the craft without being a freeman of the City; and that Hurers be forbidden to full their caps in the mills of Wandelsworth, Oldeford, Stratford, and Enefeld, where the Fullers full their cloths.

Thereupon the said Mayor and Aldermen, desiring to be fully certified as to the wishes of other-Fullers with respect to the petition, caused to be summoned all the best men of the mistery within the franchise of the City, viz., Richard Dyere, John Olescompe, William Doder, Thomas Heved, John Hardy, John Hardy [sic], Richard Sket, Richard Borard, William Modeshunte, Walter Astelyn, John Wikhale, Simon Gardiner, Roger Fullere, Peter Perisholt, John Swyft, Thomas Yonge, William Caus, John Broun, John Wyke, Geoffrey Caban, William Daukyn, Andrew atte Weye, Henry Austyn, John Flemynge, "Loye" de Dole, William Elys, John Boydone, John Prentiz, John Holbeche, John Grene, David Richard, William atte Corner, Robert Base, Geoffrey Suttone, Roger Bynge, John Clerk, John Prentys, Walter GYN, John Dorsete, Richard Haye, and John Caumbrigge, who prayed that the petition might be granted.

Afterwards, viz., on Thursday after the Feast of St. Katherine [25 Nov.], 50 Edward III. [A. D. 1376], others were summoned to give further information, viz., Walter Denyas, John Bristowe, William Wormenstre, Henry Lovel, Richard Cornewaille, Thomas Lavender, Robert Comptone, Nicholas Potyn, Roger atte Wode, John Mortone, John Umfrey, Thomas Hardynge, and John Caysho, who said on oath that to full cloths with earth and water was advantageous to all the Commonalty, but to full them with "syge," i.e., urine, was deceitful and prejudicial to the Commonalty. Thereupon the said ordinances were approved, and any one convicted of fulling with "syge" was in future to be fined. (fn. 13)

Thereupon Geoffrey Suttone, William Wormenstre, John Swyft, and Simon Gardiner were elected Wardens of the mistery to see that the said ordinances were observed.

Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1900

"Be it known unto all, as well present as to come, that I, William Avenel, have entered into an agreement with Richard de Vernon, and Simon Basset, who have my two daughters, and heirs, of all my land and inheritance, and to them, as my heirs, I have granted and enfeoffed all my land and inheritance after my decease, which they shall divide, sharing equally everywhere, and in all things, as my heirs, and so that Simon Basset, and his heirs, shall do to Richard de Vernon, and his heirs, what the younger shall owe to the elder. Moreover, in my manor, namely Haddon, I have granted to the aforesaid Richard, my capital mansion, which is at the east, where my father William Avenell dwelt, and where
the Chapel of St. Nicholas is founded with the orchard on the same side ; and to Simon Basset, my other mansion, which is at the west, with the orchard on the west side. In Adestoca (co. Bucks.) I have granted to the said Richard de Vernon, my capital mansion,
with two orchards, one on each side of the mansion. Also to Simon Basset, in the same vill, a certain mansion, equal in size to the capital mansion, with the orchard of Roger (sic).

In Irtliburc also I have granted to the said Simon Basset a capital mansion, and to the said Richard de Vernon in the same vill a certain mansion, equal in size to the capital mansion. This covenant and agreement, the said Richard de Vernon and Simon Basset, my order having been faithfully preserved, have confirmed, by oath. Of this covenant and agreement, these are the witnesses : William, son of Hugh de Fuletibi ; William, son of Hugh the
Mconer ; Gerold, son of Richard,"

Inquisitions Post Mortem, Henry IV, Entries 447-509

504

Writ 12 April 1401.

NORTHAMPTON. Inquisition. Northampton. 6 June (1401)

William de Herle, knight, and Thomas de Radeclyf, parson of Olney, by a fine of 1339 [CP 25(1) 177/75, no. 181] conveyed the manor of Moulton to Ralph de Basset of Drayton Bassett and Joan his wife for their lives, with successive remainders to Ralph de Basset the son and Joan, daughter of Thomas de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, and the heirs of their bodies, the male heirs of Ralph de Basset, Ralph de Stafford for life, Richard de Stafford for life, Ralph son of Ralph de Stafford and his heirs male, Richard son of Richard and his heirs male, and finally to Thomas son of Thomas de Bello Campo the earl, and his heirs male. Thus he held it, of the king in chief as half a knight’s fee.

Long before his death he granted by letters patent shown to the jurors to John Longevyll, esquire, 10 marks yearly for life; and to William GYN custody of the warren of Moulton for life. Apart from these grants the annual value of the manor is £27.

By the grant of John de Melbourne and Roger de Ledebury by a fine of 1344 [above, no. 491] he held the manor of Potterspury of the honour of Tutbury as one knight’s fee, annual value £20.
Long before his death he gave the manor of Cosgrove, not held of the king in chief, to Nicholas Lyllyng for life to hold by the rent of a rose at Midsummer, with reversion to himself and his heirs.
Potterspury is part of the lands included in the grant of Richard II of 1383 [above, no. 491].

Date of death and heir as above.

A Second Domesday? The Hundred Rolls of 1279–80

https://reviews.history.ac.uk/review/691

- o - o - o - o - o - o -

Jones, Bridgett, trans., Kent Archaeological Society, ed., Kent Hundred Rolls Project (Maidstone, UK: Kent Archaeological Society,2007).

These Hundred Rolls were the result of royal surveys conducted during the reigns of Henry III and Edward I. The inquest of 1274-5, which produced these Hundred Rolls, was commissioned by Edward I shortly after his return from crusade to a country recovering from civil war. The king sent out commissioners to present juries in various towns and counties, made up of local knights and freemen, with a set of questions. The commissioners recorded the responses, and the result was the Hundred Rolls. The king’s officials asked the residents questions about land holdings (including even very insignificant portions of land), rent, breaches of justice, and changes made in the preceding years, among many other things. They are mostly concerned with questions of taxation and the obligations that various landholders had to their lords. Because of this, the rolls provide insight into the state of agriculture, patterns in landholding, common issues in governmental administration, and the relationships between renters, landholders, and the king. Since some parts of the survey touch on larger settlements with markets, they also contain some information about rights and dues in markets. Because some complaints regard activities at fairs, and the building efforts of burgesses which encroach on the king’s highway, some insight into the economic and architectural structure of towns is also possible. The Hundred Rolls for Kent are remarkably complete.

Many of these returns were printed in the Record Commission publication of the Hundred Rolls in the early nineteenth century. However, this is the first English translation of the rolls, and includes some that do not appear in that edition. Furthermore, the Latin text does not preserve the medieval abbreviations (as the Record Commission edition does), and so is more easily readable.

Introduction Summary:

The short introduction explains the political background to these Hundred Rolls and highlights some of the interesting aspects of these rolls.

There is an index to the hundreds, and a list of the jurors for each hundred.

The Gascon Rolls Project (1317 - 1468)

C61/55: 166 [1343-12-20]

Gascon Roll for the 17th year of the reign of Edward III 20 December 1343.

John GYN 1343

Westminster.

Concerning protection.

Order to all admirals, seneschals, vicomtes, mayors, bayles, friends and all other faithful people on both sides of the sea, within liberties and without, that they should not interfere with John Godfrey, who is bringing certain cargo to the duchy of Aquitaine, or allow others to cause him any injury or harm while bringing these goods…through their districts. John de Shoreditch, who is staying in the duchy of Aquitaine in the king’s service, has sent Godfrey, his servant, into England to purchase grain and other victuals for himself and his household, and to bring them back to the duchy. Godfrey has loaded 60 quarters of wheat, 60 quarters of oats, 40 sides of bacon and seven carcasses of beef into a certain ship of John GYN, to bring to the duchy for this reason, and the king has taken him and the cargo into his special protection and defence. Godfrey is to be allowed safe and secure passage, and any requests should be fulfilled on the king’s behalf.

The Hellard Almshouses and other Stevenage charities, 1482 – 2005, edited by Margaret Ashby

Thomas GYNNE of Stevenage 1482

In Church Lane, Old Stevenage, is a row of unpretentious cottages with a history reaching back to the 15th century. These are the Stevenage Almshouses, also known as the Hellard Almshouses, after their founder, Rector Stephen Hellard. According to the Alumni Cantabrigiensis Stephen Hellard was a member of Cambridge University, graduating as a Bachelor of Law in the year 1474-75. It is also suggested that he was 'Perhaps Doctor of Canon Law in 1492' but in his will he claims only to hold the degree of Bachelor of Arts. His date of birth is not given, but he is recorded as being 'of Yorkshire.' He was probably Rector of Upminster, Essex, from 1470 to 1472, after which, on 3rd July 1472, he was installed as Rector of Stevenage and lived there until his death in 1506. He was, however, also a prebendary of St Asaph's cathedral, which may have involved him in occasional residence there.

Stephen Hellard died in 1506, leaving in his will a legacy to the town of All Christian Souls House, ‘which house I have built for the habitation of three poor folk without any rent therefore to be paid so long as the said house does or shall endure’. Since then, the Almshouse Trust has continued and is still in operation today. The foundation will be 500 years old next year, 2006.

Although the Almshouse Charity came into being on Hellard’s death in 1506 and is remembered by its founder’s name, in fact many other people were also involved, and preparations for setting up an almshouse in Stevenage had begun some 25 years earlier. On the Feast of St Dunstan the Archbishop, in the 21st year of the reign of King Edward the fourth after the Conquest of England [ie May 19th 1482], three men signed a covenant. They were John Hykman of St Albans, Thomas GYNNE of Stevenage and John Huckle, a fuller, also of Stevenage and they were agreeing to transfer to Stephen Hellard, Rector of Stevenage, Walter Smyth, a chaplain, and William Grene, a pightle of land at Woolenwick Green, called Gleviscroft. This, with other properties as they were added, provided income from rents, for the charitable trust to use on building and maintaining the almshouses.

Through succeeding centuries the leases for these lands recorded the names of trustees and tenants and incidentally revealed useful snippets of information about the history of Stevenage. For example, a lease document of 1668 gives the names of the trustees as George Banister, George Nodes and Ginnings Chapman, all gentlemen, John Hitchin the elder, butcher, Robert Heath the elder and Robert Heath the younger, and Edward and John Nash, yeomen. The tenants were William Rumbold the elder and younger, neither of whom could write, but who made their marks on the deed. The property being let and the terms of the lease are described in great detail.

It is clear that by the mid-18th century the affairs of a number of other small local charities were also being managed by the Hellard Almshouse trustees and records show several attempts at clarification. Churchwarden Rowland Berkeley’s book, dated 1855, contains long lists of people entitled to receive help in money or other kind. It also includes records of the timber-framed former workhouse at 2, Letchmore Road, which had been acquired by the parish in 1773, but had become redundant in 1836, after the new Union workhouse was built at Hitchin. The Stevenage building continued in the ownership of the parish until 1957, when the decision was made to sell it.

The Stevenage Consolidated Charities Trust was formed in 1909, to manage the affairs of the Hellard Almshouses and eight other small charities. In 1946 the village of Shephall, some 3 miles south of the town, was included within the designated area for development and subsequently became, like Old Stevenage itself, a ‘neighbourhood’ of the New Town. Shephall’s charities were then added to those of Stevenage and are also administered under the Stevenage Consolidated Charities Trust. All documents dating from before 1909 have been transferred to the Hertfordshire Record Office. Subsequent documents, including a complete run of minutes from 1909 to the present day, are held by the Trustees at Stevenage.

Volume XXI: The Hellard Almshouses and other Stevenage Charities: 1482-2005

Volume 21, to be published by The Hertfordshire Record Society in November, will contain transcripts of all manuscript documents dating from 1482 to approximately 1940 and summaries of significant events between 1940 and 2005, such as sales of land and plans for improvements to the almshouses. Some 20th century records will necessarily be omitted to avoid embarrassment to descendants of persons mentioned. The records of the Hellard Almshouses and other Stevenage charities include names and occupations of many townsfolk, not only trustees but also the poor and other inhabitants and give an insight into the financial management of such institutions. Their details of land holdings are particularly important in Stevenage, where the development of the New Town has obliterated so much of the ancient landscape and its connections with the past. For example, the ‘Almshouse lands’ documents of the 16th and 17th centuries pinpoint exactly when the name of the lost Domesday manor of ‘Woolenwick’ changed to ‘Symonds Green’, the name by which it is known today.

The Trust’s archive is a rich and previously untapped source for research into the community of Stevenage and its surrounding district, which this publication will make more accessible both to local historians and those from further afield with an interest in charities and poor relief.

Calendar of Inquisitions Miscellaneous (Chancery) ... volume 4. 1377-1388. (1957)

1384

W. GYN, bailiff Northampton

258. Writ of alias to the mayor and bailiffs of Norhampton to permit inn-
keepers to bake bread well bolted and of good weight and size (assisa) in their
own houses, as it appears by the petition of William de Asshyn, ' hostiller,' and others, innkeepers of Norhampton that they have been accustomed to do, but
are now hindered. Westminster. 27 January 7 Richard II. [1384.] Faded.
Return by the mayor and bailiffs of Norhampton that they are hindering
William Asshyn from baking bread in his own house, reasonably as it seems to
them, and hope to do the like by other innkeepers of the town if necessary,
for the following reasons. First, no innkeeper has been used to bake bread in
his house in the past, though William in obtaining his writ has suggested the
contrary, the injustice of which suggestion may appear by the verdict of
twelve jurors sewn hereto and sealed with their seals (seals missing). Secondly, William, with one other innkeeper, who has now ceased therefrom, recently began to bake horse-bread in his house and hide it in boxes that it might not be tried by the assize, in deceit of people passing through the town.

The common bakers, who are accustomed to serve the innkeepers and other people
with bread, complain constantly, asserting that if they cannot have the
advantage of horse-bread as usual, small as it is, they will forsake the town,
as in these days there is no profit on white bread. The mayor and bailiffs
think it suspicious and, as it seems to them, unreasonable that a butcher should be a cook, a shoemaker a tanner, or an innkeeper a baker, seeing that the clerk of the market inquires in the town on articles concerning these things in his eyre; and they do not wish that such deceitful practices (seducciones) should be suffered more in their time than under their predecessors. Therefore at Michaelmas last they decided by the assent of the whole commonalty of the town that no innkeeper should in future bake bread in his house for sale; and they send this information under their seals (missing). 9 February 7 Richard II. [1384.] Faded
.
Inquisition before T. Sutton, mayor of Norhampton, William Wakeleyn,
coroner, T. [Spr]ygy and W. GYN, bailiffs, and other burgesses. Friday before
the Purification.

No innkeeper of Norhampton has been used in the past to knead any bread
in his house, unless by stealth, to the knowledge of the jurors.

About the Huntingfield Cartulary

The early Norman-Breton lords of the Boston area

Soon after the Conquest, King William invested his nephew Alan Rufus, earl of Brittany, as the chief lord of a huge swathe of land across Yorkshire and elsewhere in England. The picture above, from the Register of the Honour of Richmond of 1480, shows Alan of Brittany kneeling before the king to pay homage and receive this gift.

Alan’s English lands later came to be called the Honour of Richmond, after the castle he built at Richmond in Yorkshire. These lands included some choice spots in and around the fledgeling port town of Boston in Lincolnshire, which quickly established valuable trading links across Europe.

In early records from this area, such as those in the Kirkstead Cartulary and Huntingfield Cartulary of the mid-1100s, the name Alan appears frequently. This name has strong Breton connections, and this fact may signify that a substantial Breton community had established itself around Boston under the patronage of the area’s new Breton-Norman lords.
